Cycling in Cyprus

Cycling has become one of the great pleasures of living in Cyprus. The island is something of a hidden gem for road cycling — with long climbs, fast rolling roads, and spectacular mountain routes that rival many of the better-known European cycling destinations.

In many ways, it reminds me of Mallorca: excellent terrain, varied routes, and year-round riding conditions. The major difference is the traffic. Outside the towns, the roads in Cyprus are often remarkably quiet, which makes long rides both safer and far more enjoyable. It is entirely possible to spend hours riding through mountain roads and villages with very little traffic at all.

I ride regularly across the island, particularly in the hills and mountain regions around Kouklia, Pissouri and Paramali, where the combination of sustained climbing, good road surfaces, and scenery makes for exceptional riding. The variety is one of the attractions — from flatter coastal rides to long mountain ascents that can genuinely test endurance.

Over the years I’ve also taken part in a number of organised cycling events and sportives, including several editions of the Mallorca 312 alongside Russell. The event has become one of the best-known amateur cycling challenges in Europe, combining serious climbing with an excellent atmosphere and strong international field.

Much like tennis, cycling has become both competitive and social for me — a way to stay fit, explore extraordinary places, and spend time with a community of people who are passionate about the sport.
